South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix has reached a preliminary wage agreement to pay 60 percent of this year's employee bonuses in company stock, with the remaining 40 percent distributed in cash. This landmark arrangement comes as the artificial intelligence boom fuels astronomical profits for the memory chipmaker, translating into historic windfalls for its workforce. Under calculations based on public figures, SK Hynix employees are on track to receive an average bonus payout of 779 million won (approximately $547,000) for the year 2026.

The proposed payout represents a major shift from the company's previous compensation structures. Last year, SK Hynix committed to a ten-year agreement to distribute 10 percent of its annual operating profits to employees in cash. However, the sheer scale of earnings generated during the current AI boom prompted management to propose paying more than half of this year's bonuses in shares.

The initial stock proposal met with notable pushback from some employees who expressed anxiety over the natural volatility of SK Hynix shares and potential restrictions on when those shares could be liquidated. In response to these concerns, the finalized preliminary deal structures the equity distribution to give workers greater flexibility. Under the current terms, employees will receive stock equivalent to 40 percent of their total bonus in 2027. The remaining 20 percent in stock will be deferred and distributed across 2028 and 2029. Crucially, the deal removes all previous restrictions on stock sales, allowing employees to liquidate their shares immediately upon receiving them.

The remaining cash portion of the bonus—accounting for 40 percent of the total—will be paid out in 2027. Union delegates are currently discussing the preliminary agreement to determine its final approval.

Beyond employee compensation, SK Hynix is also taking dramatic steps to enhance its broader market valuation and satisfy public investors. The chipmaker announced a massive plan to buy back and cancel 40 trillion won ($28.6 billion) of treasury shares. Additionally, the company pledged to allocate more than 50 percent of its free cash flow generated between 2025 and 2027 directly toward boosting shareholder returns. These aggressive financial maneuvers immediately resonated with the market, driving a 13 percent surge in SK Hynix's stock price.

The preliminary wage agreement demonstrates how the company and its workers are navigating the massive earnings growth brought on by the AI boom. While the soaring demand for AI chips has resulted in unprecedented payout calculations, the shift toward stock-based bonuses represents an alternative to the pure cash payouts that were established in previous long-term agreements. Union discussions and shareholder-return actions remain the focal points as SK Hynix implements this major compensation shift.
