Trump Endorses the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement as a Catalyst for Regional Self-Reliance

In a move that highlights a shifting landscape in global security, US President Donald Trump has voiced his enthusiastic support for the newly formed alliance between Saudi Arabia, (Turkey) Turkiye, and Pakistan. Speaking via his Truth Social platform on August 16, 2026, Trump welcomed the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, signaling a potential realignment of how Middle Eastern and South Asian powers approach collective security.

A "Big, Bold" Endorsement

Trump’s reaction was characteristically emphatic. He stated he was “very happy” to see the three nations finally formalize their military cooperation. In his view, the agreement is more than just a piece of paper; it represents a "BIG, BOLD, IMPORTANT FIRST STEP" toward a future where regional powers are no longer solely dependent on Western intervention.

By framing the pact as a way for these countries to "defend themselves in a more meaningful way," Trump is echoing his long-standing "America First" sentiment, which often encourages allies to take greater responsibility for their own regional stability. He noted that the pact is a clear sign that the Middle East is "coming together" during a period of intense geopolitical friction.

The Mechanics of the Makkah Agreement

The agreement, which was officially signed on August 7, 2026, establishes a rigorous framework for mutual protection. According to Pakistan’s foreign ministry, the core of the pact is a collective defense clause: an attack on one member state is legally regarded as an attack on all three. This is intended to create a "collective deterrence" against external threats, much like the structure of NATO.

Beyond immediate defense, the three nations have pledged a shared commitment to:

Strengthening regional peace and stability.
Promoting security "in the region and beyond".
Actively participating in diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing and devastating conflict between Iran and the United States.

Navigating the US-Iran Conflict

The timing of this trilateral pact is significant. It comes as the region is gripped by a US-Israel war against Iran, which has seen violence spill over into various territories, including frequent attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The Makkah Agreement suggests that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are positioning themselves as a unified bloc capable of navigating this crisis independently.

Interestingly, Trump’s praise for this new "Makkah" bloc comes at the same time he is actively questioning traditional military arrangements elsewhere. Just hours after praising the Saudi-led pact, Trump ordered a substantial reduction in joint military drills with South Korea, calling them "costly" and "inappropriate". This contrast suggests that Trump may currently favor new, independent regional alliances over legacy US-led military exercises.

Conclusion: A New Security Era?

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement represents a bold experiment in regional autonomy. While it remains to be seen how this "deterrence" will be tested by the ongoing US-Iran war, the endorsement from a figure like Donald Trump provides the pact with significant political momentum on the world stage. For now, the "Makkah trio" has sent a clear message: they are ready to lead their own security narrative, and they have at least one powerful supporter in Washington watching with approval.
