French President Emmanuel Macron has sharply condemned foreign political leaders for seizing on recent violent unrest across France to advance their own domestic campaigns. Speaking from the Qatari capital of Doha during an energy trip, Macron described foreign remarks on the riots as unacceptable and foolish, pointing out that outsiders were relying on fabricated online narratives. His remarks targeted politicians in the middle of active electoral races, singling out figures on both sides of the Atlantic who claimed the country was being overrun.

Claims of Invasion Rejected by Paris

Macron directly pushed back against assertions that the recent disturbances stemmed from mass migration or religious extremism. As reported by The Guardian, when reporters asked whether he was referencing Donald Trump, Macron answered, "Among others." The French president stated that certain politicians running campaigns had naively adopted baseless story lines created by outside networks. He rejected claims that France had faced an influx of migrants and Islamists, insisting that such descriptions were entirely untrue.

The statements followed sharp public interventions from two high-profile foreign politicians facing imminent votes. Trump, campaigning for his Republican party ahead of next month's US midterm elections, attributed the violence to immigration policy. According to BBC News, Trump claimed the unrest was not about school conditions, asserting instead that people who hate the country were entering it, and told Macron to close the nation's borders. In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces parliamentary elections next week, claimed during an interview with the i24 channel that France was experiencing an invasion of extremist Islam. Netanyahu stated he had warned Macron following the 7 October 2023 attacks by Hamas that failing to destroy militants in the Middle East would lead to their arrival on the streets of Paris.

Disinformation Networks and Fabricated Media

Macron insisted that while foreign actors did not cause the street riots, outside forces systematically manipulated information after the violence began. According to the Financial Times, European Union regulators have begun reviewing suspected foreign online disinformation campaigns linked to the French unrest and protests in other European countries. Security officials quoted by the paper cited pro-Russian and far-right online accounts, with additional scrutiny falling on potential messaging originating in Iran and Algeria.

Specialists have identified coordinated efforts to amplify civil division. David Colon, a researcher at Sciences Po university, told the Financial Times that pro-Kremlin influencers tied to the Russian network Storm-1516 worked to spread false narratives. BBC Verify examined more than 15 fabricated videos from another Russian-linked operation called Matryoshka, which copied the graphic identities of established news organisations such as Le Monde, Euronews, and France 24.

Artificially generated imagery also gained massive online traction. BBC Verify investigated a viral image purportedly showing an elderly French couple stripped to their underwear by looters in Paris. Sabrina Hania, director of the website Infos-Israel.News, acknowledged that her outlet created the picture using ChatGPT after a television report referenced unconfirmed police claims. Although initially marked as artificial content, the image was recirculated without disclaimers on social network X, gathering more than six million views despite prosecutors confirming they had no evidence of such an event occurring.

Heavy Damage and Hundreds Detained

The unrest began on the periphery of peaceful cost-of-living demonstrations, which themselves followed weeks of student demonstrations regarding high school conditions. However, the gatherings quickly spiralled into widespread property destruction and street clashes in major metropolitan areas, including Paris, Marseille, Nice, and Lyon. In Limoges, protesters set fire to the historic town hall, causing severe damage.

French government officials conceded that police units temporarily lost control of the situation as masked groups looted commercial districts, including the Châtelet-Les Halles retail hub in central Paris. Macron blamed much of the chaos on agitators from ultra-left fringe groups and vowed that the legal system would take an uncompromising stance.

Official figures reveal an extensive legal crackdown. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin reported that security forces took 2,500 people into custody. Of those detained, 917 individuals faced formal prosecution, and courts sent 174 people directly to jail. BBC News had previously noted that nearly 150 people had been jailed and more than 800 brought before judges in the immediate wake of the weekend unrest.

Emergency Measures and Capital Lockdowns

With the country bracing for further demonstrations, the French state has escalated security deployments while rejecting broader emergency legislation. Macron stated in Qatar that France does not require a formal state of emergency, insisting that authorities possess sufficient resources to maintain public order. Nevertheless, government ministers announced a massive policing framework, preparing to deploy military units alongside reinforced police squads.

Authorities instituted partial night curfews in sensitive sectors across Paris, Marseille, and Lille on Monday and Tuesday, with plans to extend them. For Thursday, Paris police announced an exclusion zone banning all demonstrations between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. across critical administrative and cultural sectors. The restriction covers the Elysée presidential palace, both chambers of parliament, Bastille and République squares, the Châtelet-Les Halles commercial area, and major tourist sites like the Louvre museum and the Champs-Elysées.

The severe unrest has triggered international travel warnings and shaken European financial markets. The yield on French benchmark 10-year government bonds climbed past 5 percent on Wednesday, marking its highest rate since 2002.

Looming Showdowns With Unions and Activists

The French government faces a prolonged period of political and civil instability six months before presidential elections to determine Macron's successor. Grassroots activists from the yellow vest (gilets jaunes) movement, which led nationwide protests against living costs and public service cuts in 2018, have filed formal notices for a central Paris march on Saturday. Student organisations have also organised demonstrations for the same day to demand greater educational funding. Macron warned that anyone attempting to sow disruption in city centres over the weekend would be halted.

Meanwhile, organised labour is preparing wider industrial action. Trade union leaders met Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on Wednesday, though the talks produced no agreed solutions. Sophie Binet, head of the CGT union, warned that public anger was legitimate and required political solutions rather than police suppression. France's leading trade unions have scheduled a nationwide day of mobilisation for 5 November. Similar street disturbances have surfaced in other European nations facing strained budgets, including Belgium and Italy, where the Italian government recently ordered 500 soldiers into Milan to contain street violence.
