A Humiliating European Defeat

Manchester United endured one of the most embarrassing results in the club's European history following a 4-1 defeat away to Como in the Champions League. The heavy loss left the team reeling and placed intense scrutiny on head coach Michael Carrick. BBC News reported that only an injury-time consolation goal from Joshua Zirkzee saved the squad from matching the heaviest continental losses in their history. The scale of the embarrassment was further highlighted by the stark historical contrast between the two clubs. Back when United last lifted the continental trophy in 2008, the Italian side was competing in the fourth tier of their domestic pyramid while drawing tiny crowds of barely two hundred people. During the recent match, Como's star player Nico Paz opened the scoring after just 118 seconds, created the second goal, and added a third. Carrick admitted after the match that the performance was completely unacceptable.

Bruno Fernandes Questions Tactical Decisions

Following the final whistle, club captain Bruno Fernandes did not hide his frustration with the team's setup. Speaking to TNT Sports, as cited by BBC News, the Portuguese midfielder pointed the finger at the coaching staff's tactical instructions. Fernandes explained that the staff chose a strategy not to press man-to-man, which often left space behind the defensive line. He noted that giving too much possession to opposing teams allows them to build unearned confidence. When asked directly by broadcasters whether the manager got his tactics wrong, Fernandes stated that evaluating and fixing those issues is the responsibility of the manager and his staff. He argued that the team needs to display more bravery under pressure by taking the necessary risks to press high up the pitch and make opponents uncomfortable.

Michael Carrick Responds and Apologises

Head coach Michael Carrick faced immediate questions regarding his future and the team's poor tactical execution. When informed of his captain's post-match comments during his press conference, Carrick offered a curt reply. BBC News noted that the manager stated that regardless of any system or tactics chosen, basic effort remains non-negotiable. He emphasised that players who fail to run forward and track back will never win matches. Rather than addressing speculation about his job security, Carrick focused heavily on expressing contrition. He walked across the pitch after the final whistle, ignoring his beaten players to march over to the 700 travelling supporters. Carrick raised his hands repeatedly to acknowledge their pain, echoing a gesture previously made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following a heavy away loss at Vicarage Road in November 2021 prior to his dismissal a day later. Carrick publicly apologised to the supporters, explaining that his entire life is wrapped around the club and that he feels the exact same anguish they do.

Deepening Struggles Across All Competitions

The Champions League capitulation against Como is part of a much broader and alarming slump for Manchester United under Carrick. Last season, Carrick guided the club back into Europe's elite competition by winning 12 of his 17 matches in charge, earning a two-year contract as a reward. However, the current campaign has unravelled dramatically. United currently sit 13th in the Premier League table, holding a precarious three-point cushion above the bottom club Sunderland. The team has failed to win any of its last seven matches in all competitions, marking their worst winless run since an eight-match drought under Louis van Gasl between November and December 2015. Their only victories in their last 11 games across all tournaments are an opening league win against Ipswich and a Champions League success against Azerbaijan champions Sabah FK.

Front Office Pressures and Fan Discontent

As the team's form has collapsed, supporters inside the stadium have begun turning their anger toward the club's leadership. During the chaotic evening against Como, travelling fans chanted hostile slogans directed at the ownership group alongside Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Observers have attempted to assign blame elsewhere, noting that Carrick was let down significantly during the summer transfer window. The club signed three central midfielders but failed to acquire adequate defensive depth to challenge Luke Shaw for the starting left-back position or provide adequate cover for Benjamin Sesko in attack. Sporting director Jason Wilcox has also faced scrutiny, though some defend him by pointing out that he had to work within a strict budget imposed by higher-ups, including chief executive Omar Berrada. Carrick himself admitted that watching the performance was extremely tough, stressing that he pours his absolute best effort into his role every single day regardless of whether the results follow.
