Alibaba Group is making waves in the tech industry once again, but this time it isn't through an acquisition. Instead, the Chinese titan is expected to reap a staggering $2 billion from the sale of its dedicated game development unit, Lingxi Games. The buyer, Trustar Capital (formerly known as CITIC Capital), has reached a formal agreement with Alibaba following several rounds of intensive negotiations.

This massive transaction was confirmed via an internal memo sent to Lingxi staff on Monday by the studio’s CEO, Zhou Bingshu. While the specific closing date and full regulatory details remain under wraps, the memo made one thing very clear: the management team that built Lingxi into a powerhouse will stay in place. Zhou Bingshu and his existing leadership will continue to steer the ship, providing a sense of stability and continuity for both employees and the millions of players who follow their titles.

Why the Shift to AI Matters For those following Alibaba's recent trajectory, this sale isn't entirely unexpected. The company has been aggressively reviewing its "non-core" assets. In a landscape increasingly dominated by the race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) supremacy, Alibaba is narrowing its focus. By offloading Lingxi, the group can redirect its massive capital reserves and management attention toward its primary strategic pillars: cloud computing and AI development.

The Value of Lingxi Games Lingxi Games is far from a minor player in the industry. Based in Guangzhou, the studio is the creative force behind the massive hit Three Kingdoms: Strategy Edition. This multiplayer strategy title, developed in a high-profile collaboration with Japan’s Koei Tecmo Holdings, has been a staple of the mobile gaming charts. Trustar Capital, with its extensive Asia-focused resources and operational expertise, is seen as the ideal partner to support Lingxi’s next chapter of growth.

Navigating a Changing Market The path to this deal hasn't been without its hurdles. Lingxi had previously explored external fundraising in late 2023, but those plans were reportedly derailed when China proposed stricter regulations for the online gaming sector. Additionally, the studio saw a management reshuffle earlier in 2024 when founder Zhan Zhonghui departed, leaving the reigns to Zhou Bingshu.

As Alibaba distances itself from the gaming sector, questions remain regarding the future relationship between the two entities. It is currently unclear if Alibaba will maintain commercial ties with Lingxi for publishing, technology partnerships, or cloud services. However, for now, the $2 billion payday marks a significant milestone in Alibaba's journey to becoming an AI-first corporation.
